... I am leaving you in the hands of someone who can make better use of you, use you to your full potential. This year I have not visited you as frequently as before, not filled all your beds with plants, mainly because I felt quite early on in the summer that I would be leaving you. I have enjoyed the time I've spent with you, indulged in what you have produced for me. Last year lots of potatoes, kale, brussel sprouts, garlic, and masses of raspberries and rhubarb. This year, probably due to my somewhat perfunctory performance, your produce have not been of the same ilk - yes, lots of rhubarb, raspberries and strawberries, but the potatoes were few and beetroots small. There were also some garlic appearing after a long wait, they are now hanging in a plait in my potting shed. The onions Bill gave me you also graciously grew, not to any imposing size, but certainly an improvement on last year's attempt.
But now I leave you in the hands of others, grateful for having the allotment experience but relieved to be free of the allotment responsibility. I will retreat to my back garden, where there may be some vegetables next year, in amongst the flowers - we'll see.
