A week in sunny, glitzy, beautiful Biarritz with Friendship Force - very welcoming, very French. The surfers, lying in wait for the seventh wave, like seals; afternoon tea in the Palais Royal, the summer house of Napoleon III and his Eugenie, magnificent, now a hotel - suites at a bargain of £6000 ... ; and along all the streets the tamarisks, some still in bloom. Bayonne, beautiful old city filled with basque old houses still lived in. And then on to the Pyrenees, where we stop at St Jean Pied de Port, the last outpost in France for the pilgrims before their steep crossing of the mountains into Spain on their way to Santiago de Compostella.
